The MARSPEC dataset includes geophysical and climatic data layers derived from in situ and satellite observations of the global ocean. Geophysical layers were derived from the SRTM30_PLUS high resolution (1km) bathymetry dataset and include variables describing the depth, slope, aspect, and curvature of the seafloor, as well as distance to nearest shoreline. Climatic layers were derived from NOAA’s World Ocean Atlas and NASA's Ocean Color Web. These variables characterize observed inter-annual means, extremes, and variance in sea surface temperature and salinity from the late 20th century.
